In 1957, "UNICEF chose his 1957 oil painting "Los Ninos" for a 1960 holiday card that sold millions worldwide" (DeGrazia Foundation). And although initially unsuccessful in locating galleries to display his artwork, Ted forged his own path and created the motivational, poetic, and successful gallery still open today for all connoisseurs of rousing artwork. Oils, watercolors, sketches, serigraphs, lithographs, sculptures, ceramics, jewelry, and even a tortilla tribute (6300 N. Swan, Tucson, AZ 85718) are among the versatile pieces on display. Both originals and reproductions of DeGrazia masterpieces are available on site for purchase, allowing visitors to take a bit of delightful desert talent with them.
Brief History of Gallery in the Sun
DeGrazia’s Gallery offers many inspired pieces within the Tucson art scene. Located in the foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains, the gallery’s first acre of land was purchased for a mere $25.00 down. The first adobe studio was built in 1944 – and media attention, from National Geographic to NBC, would come shortly thereafter (DeGrazia Foundation). Additionally, the grounds would eventually house the magnificent Mission in the Sun, built in honor of Padre Kino.
