The last four standing for the Lombardi Trophy have been determined as both Number One seeds fell this weekend. The Pittsburgh Steelers came back from 14 pts down at half time to beat the Baltimore Ravens 31-24 in a hard hitting game marred by five turnovers and 167 yards in penalties. The Green Bay Packer’s offense moved like a fine-tuned machine in beating the Atlanta Falcons 48-21. Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler threw for two TDs and ran for two more to lead Bears over the Seattle Seahawks 35-24. The New York Jets avenged an earlier regular season 42 pt loss to the Pats, backing up all their pre-game talk to beat the New England Patriots 28-21.

Both conference championship games are ripe with historical overtones. These four teams read like a Who’s-Who of the greatest franchises in NFL History. Imagine what a historical final four would look like.

  • Weeb Ewbank's 1968 NJ Jets, who pulled off arguably the greatest upset in sports history, led by Joe Namath, Matt Snell, Emerson Boozer and Don Maynard would face the Chuck Knoll coached Steelers of the ‘70s, led by the Steel Curtain , winners of four Super Bowls in six years, a team with 10 Hall of Famers.
  • Mike Ditka's ’85 Bears, who many contend may have been the greatest pro football team of all-time, with Buddy Ryan's unconscious ’46 defense, would battle a divisional foe Lombardi led Packer team of the 1960s, led by Bart Starr, Paul Hornung, Ray Nitschke, winners of five NFL Championships in seven years and possessed a will to win that may be unsurpassed in the annals of NFL History.

This year’s franchise representatives may be equally impressive. Below is a preview of the Conference Championships, with a historical flashback of each franchise.
