The Newsboys

The problem with rules about accessories for petites is that petites come in many different shapes. Actually, when the word “petite” is used for fashion, it just means “short,” and generally, the cutoff is 5’3”.

Petite Body Shapes

There are at least 4 petite shapes:

  • A petite can be a delicate, wispy little thing who is perfectly proportional, but diminutive. Think of this petite as a little pixie.
  • Some petites are long waisted with short legs. Everything on this type of petite is standard except for the gams. Think of this female as a peasant girl who might look good in long skirts.
  • Another type of petite has long legs and a short torso. Oh, that must be awful. Any female with these proportions has all the benefits of being a little dynamo, but also has the wonderfully long, sexy legs of a ballerina.
  • The last category is plus-sized petites. Large, but short, women have different rules. And, one must consider whether the woman is an apple shape or a pear shape in order to get the right balance.

Fashion Tips for Petites

Younger women and girls are a bit insecure about wearing hats because they grew up in uncivilized times, when people did not have the luxury of making a grand statement with their chapeaus. Fortunately, milliners have been busy recreating Victorian top hats, cloches, newsboys, schoolboy caps, and fedoras from old patterns.

Unfortunately, too many people give fashion advice to petites, but forget to consider different petite body types. Well, finding a fabulous hat is all about balance and proportion, but online advice can be confusing and contradictory.
