Time Of India News
India were one of eight nations to contest the first Cricket World Cup, held in England in 1975. The Indians made a bizarre start to the championship, playing against the host nation they fielded first, conceding 334-4, and then seemingly made no effort to chase down the target, playing out their 60 overs for a score of 132-3. They then recorded their first World Cup win, a comfortable 10-wicket victory over East Africa, before being eliminated from the tournament after defeat to New Zealand.
India had still not mastered the art of one day international cricket by the time of the next World Cup in 1979, again in England. They were easily beaten in the opening match by a dominant West Indies side, and then succumbed to New Zealand in their second fixture. Defeat to the emerging Sri Lankans rounded off a disappointing tournament for India.
India Win the Cricket World Cup
The 1983 tournament was the third to be held in England, and with just one win in six matches to date, India were not obvious favourites for the title. However they began strongly with a win against the two-time champions West Indies, and then defeated Zimbabwe. In an expanded format the group stage now saw each team play each other twice. India lost to Australia, and then to the West Indies, before recovering to beat Zimbabwe. They then thrashed the Australians to book a place in the last four. Superbly restrictive bowling, particularly from talisman Kapil Dev, then restricted England to 213 all out in the semi final. India reached the target with ease, with six wickets and six overs remaining. This set up a third and decisive meeting with West Indies in the final. India were able to muster only 183 batting first, but superb bowling from Mohinder Armanath who took 3-12 from seven overs led a fight back which saw West Indies dismissed for 140, and India were crowned World Champions.
