The U.S. News and World Report has published its annual "Best Colleges" rankings for 2011, with Harvard University topping the list of national institutions and Williams College being named the number one liberal arts school.

To rank colleges and universities, the publication used the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching's basic categorization system, which sorts schools based on their mission as well as the hierarchy of degrees offered (associates, bachelors, masters, and doctorate) in each field, as well as the number of degree-granting fields at the institution.

For 2011, Harvard University took the number one spot after sharing it in 2010 with another Ivy League school and long time rival, Princeton University. Yale University came in third place.
